Beginning

I create my image in photoshop. Then project it onto the wall using a really old “tracer” projector. I had to cover all my windows so hardly any light was coming in.
Sketch out areas

I didn’t have a picture to show but the next step, I loosely sketch out the areas. I don’t add much detail at this point because I usually change it through the process.
Using Pastels and water

This is the 2nd mural in my studio that I’ve created. The first one I rubbed the pastel with my gloved finger. I went through a lot of gloves. So this time I used a paintbrush dipped in water to blend the colors.
Slowly Paint in the areas

This part takes me quite a while. So I paint for several days, then switch projects for a while and come back again days later because it helps me see it with fresh eyes.
Adding Shadows

I begin to add shadows to the face and flowers. The paintbrush really helps with blending the colors together with water. The pastel dust falls to the floor, so I keep a vacuum handy and use it often. The other tip I’ll give you is that I placed a small blanket and wrapped it in plastic so that when I drop my pastel stick it doesn’t shatter.
Adding other elements

I continue to paint in sections by scribbling the pastel into the space then blending with a paintbrush and water.
Painting the flowers

Slowly adding details to the flowers.
Revising the image

I decided to add a small butterfly into the center of the head. Continuing to paint in the background of the halo.
Creating depth

Painting in a background color to create some depth.

I decided to add a more realistic skin tone to our lovely mural lady.
As far as I've gotten

Once I finish up some of my other projects, I’ll finish this one up and start my next one. Which will be a huge flower. ♥

I plan on adding several more murals to my studio. For now, here are the work in process pictures of my first studio mural.

I created the image in procreate, printed it out and then projected the image onto the wall.

I painted it using pastels. Prismacolor Nupastel color sticks

I was surprised how intense the color was without first treating the surface of the concrete wall. After I finished it I sprayed it with a fixative. It is a very messy process because of the dry pastels so I used the vacuum quite a bit to remove the fallen powder. Overall though, I like the simplicity of using them. I plan on using them for the next huge floral mural I’ll be adding soon.
